Medium does not include a dictate button. Voice input comes from the browser or operating system. This guide covers how to draft a Medium article by voice and edit it into a piece that reads well on a phone screen.

Set up voice input for the Medium editor

Mac: turn on Dictation in System Settings.
Windows: press Windows plus H for voice typing.
Open a new story, click into the body, and start dictating.
Say new line to break paragraphs.

Draft the story in one pass

Speak the whole piece before you edit anything. Draft the opening hook, the middle section, and the closing takeaway. Editing while dictating slows you down and often kills the voice.

Edit in Zahvox for a tight open and close

Paste the draft into Zahvox. Rewrite only the first paragraph and the last paragraph. These are the two most important pieces for a Medium reader. Then run a cleanup pass on the middle for filler.

Keep paragraphs to two or three lines.
Use subheadings every few hundred words.
