Voice-to-text on Windows

Windows has two useful voice paths: Windows Voice Typing for typing into any field, and browser voice-to-text for longer thinking. Zahvox is the second kind. Nothing to install.

Quick answer

Open zahvox.com/tool in Chrome or Edge. Allow the microphone at the site prompt and in Windows settings (Settings, Privacy and security, Microphone). Click record and speak. For system-wide dictation into any text field, press Windows key plus H to use Windows Voice Typing.

The two categories, honestly

  • Windows Voice Typing: built into Windows 10 and 11. Press Windows plus H in any field.
  • Browser voice-to-text (Zahvox): full transcript view, edit inline, copy or download, free writing utilities. Best for longer thinking and drafting.

Use Windows Voice Typing

  • Click into any text field.
  • Press Windows key plus H.
  • Speak. Text appears in the field.
  • Say punctuation names (comma, period, new line).
  • Press Windows plus H again to stop.

Set up Zahvox on Windows

  • Open Settings, Privacy and security, Microphone.
  • Turn on Microphone access and Let apps access your microphone.
  • Enable your browser (Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge) in the list.
  • Open zahvox.com/tool.
  • Click record and allow the site prompt.
  • Speak. Edit inline. Copy or download.

When to use which

Use Windows Voice Typing for quick messages, subject lines, and short notes inside any app. Use Zahvox when you want a full transcript, editing before you paste, and access to the free utilities (voice notes cleaner, email draft generator, meeting notes formatter).

Common mistakes

  • Missing the Windows-level microphone permission for the browser.
  • Leaving Teams, Zoom, or Discord open; they hold the microphone exclusively.
  • Trying voice-to-text on an http:// site; browser speech recognition needs https.
  • Using an in-app browser (Outlook web, Teams tab) that blocks the mic.
  • Ignoring input device selection when a USB headset is connected.

Browser notes

Chrome and Edge on Windows share the same speech recognition behavior. Firefox does not enable the Web Speech API by default. Zahvox auto-restarts supported sessions where the browser allows.

Honest product status

A dedicated Windows desktop app is planned. Today, the browser is the whole Windows experience. No fake accuracy claims; the browser recognizer is doing the heavy lifting on Windows.
