Voice-to-text on Mac

Mac gives you two useful voice tools: Apple Dictation for typing into any field, and browser voice-to-text for longer thinking. Zahvox is the second kind. Nothing to install, works in Chrome, Edge, and Safari.

Quick answer

Open zahvox.com/tool in Chrome or Edge on your Mac. Allow the microphone at both the site and the operating system level (System Settings, Privacy and Security, Microphone). Click record and speak. For system-wide dictation into any text field, use Apple Dictation.

The two categories, honestly

  • Apple Dictation: system feature, works in any text field, quick short bursts, offline support on some Macs.
  • Browser voice-to-text (Zahvox): full transcript view, edit inline, copy or download, free writing utilities. Best for longer thinking, drafting, and cleanup.

Enable Apple Dictation

  • Open System Settings, Keyboard.
  • Turn Dictation on.
  • Set a shortcut (mic key, or Control twice).
  • Click into any text field and use the shortcut. Speak. Use the same shortcut to stop.

Set up Zahvox on Mac

  • Open System Settings, Privacy and Security, Microphone.
  • Enable your browser (Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, or Safari).
  • Open zahvox.com/tool in that browser.
  • Click record and allow the mic prompt.
  • Speak. Edit the transcript inline. Copy or download.

When to use which

Use Apple Dictation for quick replies, Slack messages, and short emails inside apps you already have open. Use Zahvox when you want to think out loud, capture a long note, clean it up, and paste the result somewhere. The transcript view matters more than most people expect once they try it.

Common mistakes

  • Missing the macOS microphone permission for the browser.
  • Leaving a Zoom, FaceTime, or Meet tab open; that holds the mic exclusively.
  • Trying voice-to-text on an http:// site; browser speech recognition needs https.
  • Assuming Zahvox is a Mac app; it is a browser tool today.
  • Ignoring input device selection when a headset is plugged in.

Browser notes

Chrome and Edge on macOS support the Web Speech API well. Safari supports it with more restrictive session lengths. Firefox does not enable it by default. Zahvox auto-restarts supported sessions where the browser allows.
