Browser microphone blocked

A blocked microphone is almost always one of three things: a denied site permission, another app already using the mic, or the operating system refusing the browser access. Walk through each in order.

Quick answer

Reset the site permission, close any other app using the microphone, and confirm the operating system allows your browser to record audio. Reload the page and try once more.

Chrome

  • Click the lock icon on the left of the address bar.
  • Choose Site settings.
  • Set Microphone to Allow.
  • Reload the tab.

Edge

  • Click the lock icon.
  • Open Permissions for this site.
  • Set Microphone to Allow.
  • Reload the tab.

Safari

  • Open Safari, then Settings for This Website in the menu bar.
  • Set Microphone to Allow.
  • Reload the page.
  • On iOS, tap AA in the address bar, Website Settings, Microphone, Allow.

Firefox

  • Click the lock icon.
  • Open Connection secure, More Information.
  • Go to Permissions and clear Use the Microphone, then reload and allow again when prompted.

Operating system layer

  • macOS: System Settings, Privacy and Security, Microphone, enable your browser.
  • Windows: Settings, Privacy and security, Microphone, allow your browser under Let apps access your microphone.
  • ChromeOS: Settings, Privacy and security, Microphone, allow the site.
  • Restart the browser after any change so it picks up the new state.

Common mistakes

  • Trying voice-to-text on http:// (not secure) origins.
  • Leaving Google Meet, Zoom, or WhatsApp Web open in another tab.
  • Assuming Allow in the browser is enough without also allowing the browser in system settings.
  • Denying the very first prompt and never returning to reset it.

How Zahvox handles microphone errors

The Zahvox free tool listens for permission errors and shows a clear message when the mic is blocked, when the network drops, or when the browser has released the session. Fix the underlying permission and the tool picks up automatically.
