Brave is Chromium under the hood, so voice-to-text should just work, but its shields and fingerprinting protections can block the Web Speech API by mistake.
Most Zahvox users on Brave get dictation working with a two-step permission grant. If it still fails, it is almost always a shields setting silently blocking the site.
Grant microphone access
Open the voice-to-text page in Brave.
Press record and choose Allow on the mic prompt.
If nothing happens, click the Brave shield icon in the address bar.
Temporarily set shields to down for the site and reload.
Whitelist the site cleanly
Turning shields down entirely is a blunt fix. A cleaner solution is to keep shields up but allow fingerprinting to standard and allow cross-site cookies for the site, which is what the Web Speech API often needs.
Check Brave global settings
Open brave://settings/content/microphone.
Confirm the correct default device is selected.
Remove the site from Blocked if it is listed there.
Why Brave sometimes blocks speech recognition
Brave includes a script blocker that treats speech recognition as a fingerprinting surface. That is a reasonable default but it will silently break dictation. Allowing the specific site keeps every other protection intact.
Build a daily voice-to-writing habit
The first week is about proving the setup works. The second week is about turning it into a habit. Pick two moments in the day where voice-to-text in brave would save the most time, and commit to using voice for those moments only. Once the muscle memory is there, expand to a third and fourth surface. The goal is a workflow you reach for without thinking, not a demo you show off once and forget.
