Typing Urdu on a phone or laptop keyboard is slow, and many people switch to Roman Urdu just to save time. Voice to text lets you speak naturally and get proper Urdu script instead. This guide shows how to do it for free in your browser, what works well, and where you still need a quick edit.

How to type Urdu by voice in 4 steps

  • Open the free voice tool at /tool in Chrome or Microsoft Edge on a laptop or Android phone.
  • Open the language menu and choose Urdu (Pakistan).
  • Press the microphone button, allow microphone access, and speak in short, clear sentences.
  • Review the Urdu text, fix any wrong words, then copy it or download it as a file.

What Urdu voice typing does well

Everyday Urdu, short messages, notes, captions, and simple paragraphs come out well when you speak at a normal pace in a quiet room. It is much faster than hunting for letters on an Urdu keyboard layout, and you get real Urdu script you can paste into WhatsApp, Word, Google Docs, or a social post.

Where you will still need to edit

  • Punctuation: speech recognition rarely adds the Urdu full stop (۔) on its own, so add it during review.
  • English words mixed into Urdu: brand names and technical terms may come out in Urdu script or be misheard. Say them clearly or type them after.
  • Names and places: proper nouns are the most common mistakes. Check them before you send.
  • Background noise: fans, traffic, and TV lower accuracy a lot. A basic headset mic helps.

Urdu script vs Roman Urdu

Urdu speech recognition outputs Urdu script, not Roman Urdu. If you need Roman Urdu for a chat, it is usually faster to type it. If you need proper Urdu for a document, a post, or a formal message, speaking is the faster route. If you switch between Urdu and English a lot, the Pakistan page covers code-switching in more detail.

Which browser and device to use

Zahvox uses the speech recognition built into your browser. Chrome and Edge on desktop and Chrome on Android have the best Urdu support. Safari and Firefox support for Urdu is limited or missing, so switch browsers if the microphone button does nothing.
