Browser voice-to-text (no download)

You do not need an app for voice-to-text. Modern browsers ship a speech recognition API, and Zahvox uses it directly. Open a tab, allow the microphone once, and speak.

Quick answer

Open zahvox.com/tool in Chrome, Edge, or Safari. Allow the microphone once. Speak. Edit the transcript in the same view. Copy or download the result. No download, no signup, no email.

What you need

  • A supported browser: Chrome, Edge, or Safari.
  • A working microphone: built-in laptop mic is fine for a quiet room, a headset is better for longer sessions.
  • One microphone permission grant per site.

How to start

  • Go to zahvox.com/tool.
  • Click the record button.
  • Approve the mic prompt when it appears.
  • Speak in full sentences.
  • Edit the transcript in place.
  • Copy or download.

What the browser is doing

The Web Speech API opens the microphone, streams audio to a cloud recognition service run by the browser vendor, and returns text as you speak. Zahvox reads that text into a full editor. The site itself does not touch the raw audio; the browser handles that layer.

If your browser is not supported

Firefox does not enable the Web Speech API by default. Zahvox detects this and loads a plain text area so you can still write, edit, and export. For actual voice input on those browsers, either switch to Chrome or use your operating system dictation.

Privacy at a glance

  • The browser sends audio to its own recognizer, not to Zahvox.
  • Zahvox does not store the raw microphone stream.
  • The transcript stays in your browser tab session today.
  • Do not dictate regulated or confidential content into any browser recognizer.

Common mistakes

  • Denying the first mic prompt and never returning to reset it.
  • Opening the link in an in-app browser (Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn) which usually blocks the mic.
  • Using http:// instead of https://; the API only works on secure origins.
  • Leaving Google Meet or Zoom open in another tab, which holds the mic.

The Zahvox workflow

Open /tool, allow the mic once, dictate, edit inline, copy or download. Pair with the voice notes cleaner for standalone cleanup, and the email draft generator when the target is an inbox reply.
