Voice-to-text on Android

Android has two useful surfaces for voice-to-text: Gboard for one-line dictation into any app, and Chrome for longer voice-to-writing in a browser. Zahvox lives on the second one.

Quick answer

Open Chrome on Android, visit zahvox.com/tool, tap the microphone prompt to allow, and speak. Zahvox uses the browser Web Speech API, which Google runs on Android. There is no native Android app yet.

Gboard voice typing

  • Tap into any text field to bring up Gboard.
  • Tap the microphone icon on the keyboard.
  • Speak; the text appears in the field.
  • Best for short replies, one-line notes, and search boxes.

Zahvox in Chrome on Android

  • Open Chrome and go to zahvox.com/tool.
  • Tap the record button.
  • Allow microphone access when Chrome prompts.
  • Speak in full sentences. The transcript updates live.
  • Edit inline, then tap copy or download.

When to use which

  • Short reply in Gmail or WhatsApp: Gboard.
  • Two-minute meeting recap: Zahvox in Chrome.
  • Blog draft or newsletter: Zahvox, then paste into your CMS.
  • Search in any app: Gboard.

Fix a blocked microphone

  • Tap the lock icon in the Chrome address bar.
  • Tap Permissions, then set Microphone to Allow.
  • If greyed out, open Android Settings, Apps, Chrome, Permissions, Microphone.
  • Set Microphone to Allow only while using the app.
  • Reload the tab.

Common mistakes

  • Opening the link in the Instagram or Facebook in-app browser.
  • Blocking the mic on the first prompt and never resetting it.
  • Speaking with the phone at arm's length; hold it closer.
  • Trying to dictate in a noisy room and blaming the tool.

Honest limits today

Zahvox does not have an Android app. The mobile app is planned. Sessions in the browser can pause after long silences; Zahvox restarts automatically where supported. Regulated data should not be dictated through a browser recognizer; read the voice-to-text privacy guide first.
