Rewriting is any process that changes existing text to improve clarity, tone, format, or fit. It's a spectrum — from light touch-up to full rephrase — and voice-to-writing tools have to be careful where they land on it.

Definition

Rewriting is the act of producing a new version of an existing piece of text. It can be manual (an editor) or automated (a language model). It differs from cleanup, which focuses on surface fixes, and from generation, which creates net-new content.
