How to clean up transcripts
A raw transcript is a first draft. Cleaning it up is not editing your ideas, it is trimming the texture of speech so the words read the way they were meant.

The five-minute cleanup pass
- Fix proper nouns with a single find and replace.
- Rewrite the first line of each paragraph.
- Split any sentence longer than three clauses.
- Delete every 'um', 'so', and 'basically' that does not start a new idea.
- Read the result out loud once and stop editing when it flows.

- Your natural word choice; do not smooth it into corporate voice.
- The order of ideas; the transcript already captured your logic.
- Short, direct sentences you actually said.

Structure a longer transcript
Anything over three paragraphs benefits from headings. Skim the transcript, decide the three or four main sections, add H2s, and reorder paragraphs under each heading. Nothing else in the text needs to change.

- Rewriting sentences that were fine as spoken.
- Over-formalizing and losing the voice you started with.
