Dictate in Obsidian

Obsidian rewards thinking in text. Voice is a fast way to get that thinking in. Zahvox does not ship an Obsidian plugin today, but the copy-and-paste flow is short enough that most vault owners never miss one.

Open zahvox.com/tool in a browser next to Obsidian. Speak into Zahvox, edit the transcript, copy the text, and paste into any note. Add wikilinks and tags in Obsidian after paste. There is no Zahvox plugin in the community directory today.

Why voice fits Obsidian

A vault is for thinking, not for polished writing. Voice matches that mode. You capture the raw idea, drop it into a daily note or a topic file, and let the graph do its job later. Editing happens in Obsidian, not in the mic.

The Zahvox to Obsidian workflow

  • Open zahvox.com/tool in Chrome or Edge, side by side with Obsidian.
  • Allow the microphone once.
  • Speak the note you want in the vault.
  • Edit the transcript inline in Zahvox.
  • Click Copy or Download.
  • In Obsidian, click into your note and paste.
  • Add [[wikilinks]], #tags, and headings after paste.

Examples by note type

  • Daily note: dictate three lines about the day, paste into today's file, tag it.
  • Literature note: dictate what stood out from an article, paste under the source link.
  • Fleeting note: dictate a rough idea, paste into an inbox file for later review.
  • Project note: dictate the current status, paste under the project header.

Common mistakes

  • Waiting for a Zahvox plugin that does not exist yet.
  • Dictating with the vault open in a different app and losing focus between windows.
  • Trying to speak markdown syntax; use plain speech and add syntax after paste.
  • Refreshing the Zahvox tab without copying first.
  • Running two speech sessions at once; only one browser mic session can hold the microphone.

Using OS dictation inside Obsidian

If you want to dictate straight into a note, use macOS Dictation or Windows Voice Typing while your cursor is in the note. That bypasses Zahvox and gives raw text with no transcript view or cleanup step. It works for short daily entries.

Browser and device notes

Chrome or Edge on desktop are the most reliable for Zahvox. Obsidian is native, not browser-based, so the workflow is always cross-app. Zahvox auto-restarts supported browser speech recognition sessions where the browser allows it.

Honest product status

An Obsidian plugin is on the roadmap idea list, not shipped. Direct integration is not something Zahvox promises today. If another page suggests a live Obsidian plugin, that is not this product yet.
