What works well on iPad
- Short to medium dictation sessions in Safari or Chrome.
- Wired and Bluetooth mics as input, including AirPods.
- The full editable transcript view in landscape mode.
- Copy or download flow into Notes, Mail, Docs, or any writing app.
iPad honest limits
iPadOS is stricter about long background sessions than desktop browsers. If you switch apps, sleep the iPad, or leave the page silent for too long, the recognizer can stop. Zahvox tries to auto-restart supported sessions, but iPadOS may block a restart in some cases. Keep sessions focused.
Setup steps
- Open Settings, Safari, Microphone, and set the default to Ask or Allow.
- Open zahvox.com/tool in Safari.
- Tap the record button.
- Approve the microphone prompt.
- Speak in short bursts and edit inline as you go.
AirPods and external mics
If you have AirPods paired, iPadOS routes audio through them by default. That is usually fine, but the mic on AirPods is not the same class as a wired headset. For long or important sessions, a USB-C or Lightning mic gives cleaner text.

Common mistakes
- Expecting a native iPad app; there is not one today.
- Leaving the tab in the background; iPadOS can end the session.
- Trying in an in-app browser (Instagram, Facebook) which usually blocks the mic.
- Denying the first mic prompt and never returning to reset it in Settings.
- Running Zoom or FaceTime in another window; those hold the microphone.
